Anyhooo there's finally a few finishes .. yea for completing a couple littles that had been hanging around here WAY too long. Once I finally made up my mind to get them done, they took less than an hour each to finish. I'm not really thrilled with turning the back to the front for the binding, not the neatest edge in the world, but it does make for a cozy edge.
These were a bit tedious to knit, took longer than expected because the legs were made longer than usual, I'm so happy to have them done! Probably won't get worn for awhile ~ it's gotten way to warm for wool socks but you never know. Photography leaves much to be desired.

Hope to finish this before too many more weeks of summer go by ~ it is an easy knit. The other sweater started had a booboo about 6" up on the back so some frogging has been done. Easy pattern but does require good light and concentration to make sure I'm picking up the stitch but not creating extras.

This sock reminds me of Sue ~ I pictured her knitting something like this once upon a time. I'm really going to miss her! Needs a mate to keep it company.

Started one more pair of socks and a shawl ~ think there's a serious case of startitis here ~ simply not enough hours in a day.

Pieces are all cut for #13 grad quilt and I'm anxious to get started on that but I really need to finish two littles and the other one I started earlier this spring. If anyone ever figures out how to keep on working while they are asleep ~ I'd love to learn =).

How did it get to be 2013 so quickly? Always have good intentions of getting more stuff done but somehow the days slip past way faster than they should. Finished a couple Christmas stockings ~ one delivered and the other not yet. Good thing that recipient is too little to know the difference! Other than that, not much happening here.
There are blocks sewn in strips waiting for between rows sashing, units cut and waiting to be pieced together for the one grad quilt due this year, one sock patiently waiting for the second to be completed, and another sock still in beginning stages, a couple quilts still needing binding and a couple more tops in need of quilting and binding. So instead of finishing up all these ufos, i starting knitting along with the Advent Scarf KAL on Ravelry in December. Never before worked with lace yarn and lace patterns or used beads, so this has been an adventure!
So there you have it. There were almost 100 ladies who completed all 24 days before the end of the year, but at the rate i'm knitting, it'll be 2014 before it gets done. Fun tho' and what's the rush ~ as long as my eyes don't fail me. It's being knit with a lace weight wool/silk yarn on size 2 needles. The beads are applied in the spacer sections only using Oral-B Superfloss. Tried a size 13 crochet hook initially, but find the floss easier to work with. The original design calls for 91 stitches cast on, but i've opted for the 3/4 width size (20 less stitches) that one of the knitters kindly figured out and am liking that size a lot.

It probably goes without saying that my home is sadly in need of cleaning, but we did get Christmas put away.

Here's the second quilt finished for last year's graduate #10:

This was a way different design than I'd ever done before but I had all kinds of fun once I started. The original pattern was taken from www.modabakeshop.com called "Gift Box Quilt" by Angela Pingel. Once all the blocks were done I decided that they needed to be rearranged into complete and incomplete boxes signifying completion of one segment of his education and work still in progress. The back is "Where the Boys Are" by Benartex and that idea tickled my funny bone. If they're not snuggled under grann's quilts then who knows where they are. It was quilted with the pantograph "Square Spiral" by Keryn Emmerson. The quilting was pretty wonky but the whole thing quilted the same so I decided that must have been intended. Obviously there's a whole lot more practice on that machine needed before I'll ever be halfway good. But that's okay.

Other than that there's been a whole lot of knitting going on, projects started and on needles, one pair of socks completed:

These were fun to knit and the results made me smile! Hope the recipient likes them as much as I do.
Still trying to figure how to knit in my sleep ~ there's no telling what could be done.

Can't even remember what was posted about grad #11's quilt so here's a quick recap. This baby was started way back before I'd done a whole lot of quilting and had yet to realize how very critical accurate seams were for setting blocks together properly. Another issue was that all of the 12" finished quarter square triangle blocks and the smaller half-square triangle blocks were cut with the bias edges on the outside of the blocks. That made for some necessary frogging, resizing, and restitching many of those blocks. Lesson learned: I don't get along too well with biased edges (hehe). At any rate I was glad when all was said and done that those blocks were resized ~ it made stitching them together sew much easier!
For a while I was pretty good about keeping a file card with snippets of each fabric including the manufacturer, collection, any additional selvage info, how much I had, where it came from, when I bought it and what I intended to do with it. For some odd reason, I have no record of these fabrics at all ~ how did that happen? Anyway, the quilt was gifted and by now, hopefully, it's being used. She said she loved it. =)

Other than that there are socks on needles, one sweater finished, quilts running around in my head ~ only one next year and I think I've decided on a pattern for it, two that still need binding stitched down, two that need quilting and binding both and a serious lack of motivation at the moment. If only I could figure out why it's so easy to start new projects and so tough to see them through to completion. Gotta' seriously work on that!

There was a giveaway by Carol at www.mamacjt.blogspot.com and my name was chosen as one of her winners. This pincushion, front and back, was created with labels that she purchased with that idea in mind. She does the most interesting work ~ colorful and very creative. My new pincushion is enjoying a place atop my sewing machine where she helps me piece peacefully.

Another little munchkin joined the family a short while back and this will be his quilt when it's complete. Blocks were easy to construct, but getting the layout correct took way more brainpower than I expected. Still amazes me how easy it is for me to lay one block down the wrong way, mess up the entire layout, and spend hours trying to figure out what went wrong, including making another unneeded block. Finally got it fixed and I'm happy with the end result. This one still needs quilting.

Ouch, this hurts the poor eyes. Didn't get a very good picture of this pair, but they are comfortable, have been worn and washed many times already. Been awhile since anything's been added sewing or otherwise. Sew here goes:

has been in the making for more years than I care to admit! This was started before I knew enough about quilting to know I was tackling a pattern way beyond my capabilities at the time. Back then I got all excited about the idea of making half square triangles by sewing two long strips of fabric together on both edges and then cutting the triangles by flipping the fabric over and back with each cut. Works great except for one glaring fact: you end up with cut edges on the diagonal/stretchiest part of the fabric and then have to stitch those diagonals together without stretching them. The 12.5" unfinished quarter square triangle blocks are complete ~ all 18 of them. All but five of the pinwheel units centering the sawtooth star blocks are done as well as three completed sawtooth star blocks . I'm thinking these blocks will have to be starched like crazy to prevent as much stretching as possible ~ in the hopes that the blocks are not all stretched out of shape during the pressing process.

I finished this quilt more than one year ago except for the binding. It was intended for this little munchkins little bigger sibling. He surprised us all. This was not quite what I thought might be appropriate for a boy, so it went into a holding pattern while I finished another one. A little birdie told me this one might be a girl so the binding was finished last week. It was quilted with simple straight line quilting and backed with an organic cotton flannel which is squishy soft. Bound it with scraps left from the top. I love this quilt!

Another gift made:

These patterns were both found on Ravelry and made with Drops Merino Extra Fine Superwash Wool. Wrapped in fabric and tied with a 3.5" wide strip of fabric, I've found a great use for fabrics that don't have any intended purpose at the moment. Good thing her mom is a quilter! (and mom, if you read this ~ I'm thinking Fancy Nancy all the way =). If you haven't been introduced to Fancy Nancy, look her up in the children's section at the library.

Hope you'll be a good year for everyone!

Progress report requested ~ we are making progress. Went from this on Monday:

To this on Wednesday:

And yes this quilt is almost finished. Have a little more work to do on the binding. The sewing machine cover got tossed on top of it so you can't see much. That will be UFO #1 complete when it's all done.

I'm planning on standing a couple sheets of insulation covered with batting in front of the fireplace to make my design wall. The gas log was disconnected years ago and to use it we'd have to keep the flue open. That pulls too much heat from the rest of the house. Better to just use a space heater.

This is my new baby. Isn't she pretty:

Still haven't decided what to call her ~ any suggestions? Lots of names running around in my head, but I can't seem to settle on one.

Now the dilemma ~ organize this mess into my new space:

This is only a small portion of what's going on in this room ~ yikes. If organizing was one of my strong suits I'd be in good shape ~ but that's an ongoing battle with me. Today's challenge is to empty the shelving units and get them moved down, along with all the stuff contained thereon. Wish me luck. I'm organizationally challenged, so instead I finished a knit project:

Those booties were just plain fun to knit. Both patterns were Ravelry downloads: Hat is Aviatrix by Justine Turner "justjussi knitwear design" and the booties are a Norwegian "Pattern for stay-on babybooties" that I struggled with a bit until I read the Ravelry thread which clarified what I was struggling with. There will be more of these booties in my future ~ I love them. The hat was an easy knit also, although I had to adjust the pattern because it was not written for a fingering weight yarn. (It looks like I managed to get a small piece of thread from the ironing board on the hat.) Hope they fit that new great grandson. Yikes ~ when did I get so old. The yarn is a fingering weight bluefaced leicester from Angora Valley Yarns which is completely machine wash and dry. Beautiful yarn to work with!

Seems the days fly by and not nearly as much is accomplished as I would wish. I am easily sidetracked and working more slowly these days. Christmas was lovely ~ Santa did a great job of passing out gifts, creating many happy memories.

Other than that there are several projects on knitting needles ~ one needs to be completed and put in the mail. The hat is done, except for the button, as is one bootie but the foot part of the second bootie still needs finishing. Hope to get that done today.

Not much sewing going on, flooring is almost finished in my new space but we do need to find a heater to warm that room up. It's pretty chilly down there. I am anxious to get started on the moving process ~ that will take a while but a little at a time and soon everything will be where I need it .... in my dreams anyway.

So before the year ends this quilt needs to be added to the list of completions. Love the final result, but lots of mishaps along the way ~ including taking pictures of the quilt before gifting it and then discovering after it was gone that the pictures I thought I took of the quilt front were not on my camera card. I had one of the back but nothing else ... those gremlins at work again. Luckily we made a trip to Michigan's cold northern peninsula where I was able to snap a few more pictures.

Last but not least:

The quilt pattern was from Scrap Basket Surprises by Kim Brackett called Christmas Ribbons and it was quilted with Fay Feathers by Lorien Quilting. A simpler quilting pattern would have been a better choice ~ the batt was thick and made this particular pattern a tough go. The back had to be pieced and even though I thought it was pretty well centered when it was started, it ended up being off by quite a bit ~ all part of the learning process! It is done and done is good!

The top completed at our quilt retreat is still waiting for quilting. As soon as my new machine is up and running it will get done. Four that need to be bound ~ think I finally decided how best to finish three of them. That's 5 ufos along with a couple of grad tops that need to be finished. That's a good start to listing ufos for next year.

It's always a "treat" for me to get quilting company and when we can spend an entire three days simply sewing, laughing, eating and occasionally sleeping ~ what more could one want. I was gifted with the yummiest smelling soap I've ever used. Apple, cinnamon and peach if I'm remembering correctly. Didn't take long to use the entire bar but sure enjoyed using it. In addition I got a beautifully embroidered dish towel which is hanging on my fridge door at the summer place. Thanks again, Carol! From Barb I got the cutest butter dish ~ it looks just like a stick of butter in a yummy yellow color. She also helped me finish the wall hanging I put together using the half square triangles we traded the year before. It was complete except for sewing down the binding on the back. When I tried to machine stitch it, I was not happy with the look of the project .... just didn't have a thread that worked. Barb offered to stitch it by hand, bless her heart. I love the final result:

When we took a stroll down the road to the pier, she also found a tree branch that worked to hang it. (Note to self: do NOT ever try to shorten a branch by breaking indoors when anyone else is in the room or someone will loose an eye. [I promise Carol!])

My quilty "Hug and A Kiss" is hanging, but I may move it to the porch where I usually do my sewing. Couple projects that need completion before Christmas and still a bit of shopping to finish. Hope to complete the shopping this week and get gifts wrapped ~ then there will be a little bit of baking for our next party. Still waiting on completion of my quilt studio downstairs. The next project is to pick up foam matting for the floor. It is colder down there now so we're also in the market for an efficient but not too costly to operate space heater. Some day soon maybe the mess up here can all be moved down and out of sight 8).

Anyway, here's another grad quilt that was completed for one of last year's graduates. Easiest of the three that were done:

Also finished a couple knitted baby bonnets, one pair of booties and am working on a second pair of booties. Hope to finish those before the baby arrives. Kinda fun not knowing if it's a boy or a girl, but makes for double the knitting to be prepared for either. Still have four quilts to be bound, one that needs some repair work because my machine choose to skip all kinds of stitches when I was quilting. One top that needs quilting, two in the process of being made and one in the thinking stages. As I said .... no lack of UFO's and things to be done!

So with that and 'til next time, I'm still

InStitches
InStitcheshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866304677169061525noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-837175073062782710.post-54076399536901551562011-11-21T16:07:00.000-05:002011-11-21T16:07:52.836-05:00FinallyWhere does time go? Can hardly believe it's been so long since I had anything to say ;) and as I've read on a couple different blogs "the longer you stay away, the easier it is to stay away". Guess there was nothing to add until the grad quilts for 2011 got finished and delivered. The last one made it middle of last week so for that I'm thankful. It was a busy summer ~ many trips, some long and some not so long. A Nolting 20 Series Pro quilting machine came to live at our house a couple weeks ago, but so far I have not used it. The room where she's going to stay still needs to be completed so hopefully, it won't be too much longer and I'll be up and running.

What to show first? How about a skirt made from quilt scraps. The pattern is Strip-pieced Pleated Skirt by Sarah Meyer found on Moda Bakeshop. I'm very happy with the end result.

A sweet little lady got this for her third birthday and she promptly put it on and wore it under the dress she was wearing.

Next there is one little guy's quilt that finally got quilted, bound, and finished:

No borders on this one.

One more ~ this one is the first grad quilt finished and delivered before she left for school late summer. This one needs some tweaking when she brings it home. I tried using Sharon Schamber's recommendation for school glue to secure the binding to the back before final stitching. Unfortunately, I didn't think to place another line of stitching inside the seam allowance and the backing ended up folding back over itself in several places and showed up after I washed it. Should be fairly easy to fix once it comes back.

Didn't get any closeups of the quilting but I used a pantograph by Lorien Quilting called Happy Times which seemed appropriate. I love how well the grad herself blends with the quilt. She seemed like she was really happy with it.

All for now. I'll try not to stay away so long.InStitcheshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866304677169061525noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-837175073062782710.post-69918296103431927052011-04-20T23:15:00.000-04:002011-04-20T23:15:17.408-04:00Home againbut missing the warm temps on the Gulf Coast!!! What's with snow in April anyway? Me thinks we should have stayed longer but the fun had to end sometime, I guess. We missed our Colorado friends and everyone else who didn't make it this year. We had a beautiful month.
Have not accomplished nearly what I'd hoped. Good news is Matilda seems to be humming along nicely after a few hiccups. I did manage to quilt one of the little's but had a few problems before I finally got everything figured out. Strangest thing, though, there are loose thread ends on the back of the quilt where there is no broken thread or thread ends on the top. I am truly baffled! Ended up having to raise the pressure foot shaft by about an eighth of an inch ~ the pressure foot was catching on seams. Then the thread shredded in several places on one row but after adjusting thread tension and changing to a size 20 needle (huge) the stitching went good. And of course as soon as everything else was working the way it was supposed to, the bobbin ran out of thread. Anyway the quilting is done. It just needs thread ends buried, trimming and binding. I also used different thread than was used when I ran into trouble and I'm really happy with this match.
All for now.

Not only am I mathematically challenged, I'm also dyslexic (?) when it comes to quilt patterns. I'm wondering how frequently I observe things without really seeing them. Probably more often than I care to know. I was getting ready to put the final border strip on my quilt and realized that ONE of the four patch units (out of 120) was flipped in the wrong direction. Flipping unit. All the time spent checking and double checking to make sure that everything was placed correctly and I still missed it. I was tempted to leave it ~ but once it made itself known, it was so obvious, I shook my head in wonderment at how I hadn't noticed it before. Flipping unit. Anyway that mistake got corrected and all the borders are sewn on so I do have a complete top (but also have my fingers crossed, cause you never know what else might rear it's naughty head). The short border problem was caused by me figuring that a 2.5" border and a 1.5" border (finished sizes) together made a 3" finished border .... duh elementary school refresher course needed maybe? My final side borders were also cut to 8" for some reason ~ I did want to add to the width of the quilt but after I cut them back so the top and bottom would work, I liked the whole look better. Top and bottom finals were a little narrower to begin with because the quilt didn't need the extra length. Final size is 68" x 90". Here's a peek:

As much as I love the border fabric, I was never completely thrilled with the light and medium chosen. Wonder if that's the reason I struggled so with this one. It should probably be called "Frog Pond" cause I did more frogging on this than ever before ~ and I am the queen of frogging! The binding strips are all pieced. The backing still needs to be washed and pieced. Hopefully once it goes on Matilda it be an easy one to quilt. The backing has big huge flowers on it and I'm seriously thinking about loading her upside down and using the flowers as pattern to quilt. Have to think on that some.

Something else I've been working on ~ this is the "I am NOT making them a quilt" quilt top =)

This one was a bit of a struggle, too. Notice the orange tag. Those were my row markers. Each row has either two more or two less squares than the previous row. Never tried an on point setting before but I saw one online that I absolutely loved and figured I give it a try. The first half of the top went together just like I had hoped and then came the other half. I managed to put about six rows together exactly opposite of how they should have been sewn and when I went to place them, I had way too many matching fabrics side by side and short rows where there should have been longer rows. Probably should have stuck with using only a few different colors for the rounds rather than scrappy, but I'm happy with the end result. Then last Friday evening I pulled out the backing which was ordered online and discovered that they had shorted me by half a yard. Had to wait til Monday to call and was told that they would ship correct yardage immediately and in the meantime UPS would come to pick up what I had received. With all the snow I'm wondering if it will come this week. Also wondered why I didn't check the yardage immediately upon arrival. Lots of wondering going on this week.

Today was a beautiful sun shiny day. Something to be very happy about!

Thought I was going to have a finish tonight ~ might have had to cheat a bit as it's after midnight so not quite a finish before the end of the month. I know you can hear the but coming. But, somehow, someway I figured the measurement on the last top and bottom borders about 2.5" short. Yow ~ where was my brain when I figured those? First two border sets all went on with no problem, third border sides went on with no problem. Now I have to figure how I'm going to fix my mistake. Don't trust my brain to make good decisions at this hour of the night so it is going to wait until morning.

Still have not heard anything on my serger. I was told four days when I brought it in so it should be ready tomorrow.

Also heard there's a possibility of 14 - 15 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow which means I probably won't be going anywhere the next couple of days. Thankful I don't have to go out to work anymore. May have to go out to help the main man shovel though.
I have three more seams to complete and borders to add. The pieced top is smaller than I'd like it to be so there will have to be borders. I'm hopeful that I can meet my goal of completing this top before the end of the month. I had plans to use this same pattern in a different configuration for Grad #31 in year 2028 (how's that for planning ahead) only I've been having so much trouble getting all the triangle points to match that I'm really having second thoughts about those far off plans.
The blocks are all done on the latest baby quilt but still need to be sewn together. It will be one colorful, fun quilt top when it gets finished. I've added a couple more inches to the sock I'm working on but that's been slow going. Had to bring my serger in for repair today. Tried to sew with her before Christmas and she was stitching along merrily and then jammed up all of a sudden. No idea what happened ~ wondering how long since she had been oiled. Did a good cleaning and oiling but still nothing. Figured I'd better have trained repair person look at her so off she went.

Here's another quilt made about 3 1/2 years ago. This was fun to make and fun to give. I don't remember where I found the pattern, maybe one of my quilting magazines ~ but her big sister is using the same pattern with fabrics she collected when she traveled out west with us a few years ago. That's been in the works for a couple years too. She is anxious to finish it before she starts a new phase in her life. Graduation is coming soon and then she'll be off to college.
I have challenged myself to finish the quilt top for grad #8 before the end of January. Grad #9's quilt is still in lots of small pieces, not many units together yet. I'm challenging myself to finish that top by the end of March. Grad #7's quilting is hanging on Matilda's belly bar, patiently waiting for me to get my act together and start the quilting process again. I'm dragging my feet on trying. Not sure why ~ perhaps dread of troubles when I'm thinking everything should be back in working order. Won't know until I try!

Still have a few smaller quilts I haven't posted. Here's one that was fun to put together. I love all the bright pinks in this one. This is another pattern I found online at www.byannie.com called Wickedly Easy Quilts and sized to include crib, lap, twin, and queen. It really was an easy top to make.
She embroidered a lovely tea towel in my Christmasy kitchen colors and I just love it. I have to shop for a towel rack to hang it on so everyone can admire it.

It's much to late to add anything more to this post. I'm wishing a very Happy New Year to everyone.InStitcheshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866304677169061525noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-837175073062782710.post-40215214372003064582010-12-26T19:21:00.000-05:002010-12-26T19:21:03.884-05:00Just in the Nick of timeThe Christmas stocking was finished and hung and Santa did a great job of filling it!

Meanwhile the elf was just as busy finishing up another project. This was a fun sundress/jumper to make. Directions were found online at: http://habitual.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/habitual_simplesundress.pdf . A ruffle was added to the bottom and a bow for each shoulder rather than one long tie. Not sure if that was the best idea. Have to wait and see how that works.

Anyway here are a few of my favorite things. Most were gifts, a few I made myself.

I'm wondering if Barb's poor artist made it big time. This Santa was a gift which is signed by the artist, Audrey Miller. The little angel is an ornament I made when our local rec department offered a class in Swedish straw ornaments. Several were made but she is my favorite. The smocked and paper ornaments were gifts as was the Christmas bag with a tiny ball of yarn and two bitty knitting needles. The crocheted star and stocking are also my handwork. Tons of happy memories.

Then we have a couple WIPS ~ one almost done and one needing lots of stitches:

The stocking needs about four more rows of ribbing and a name stitched on. This was an interesting challenge for me. I've always knitted Christmas stockings from the top down on straight needles, until the leg and heel turn are complete then switching to double pointeds. This time I tried knitting from the toe up on one long (not quite as long as I would have liked, but it's working) circular needle. Had the toe all knitted and was starting on the foot when I realized it wasn't possible to use the pattern I'd planned on 'cause it was being knitted in the round ~ a real DUH moment. It was necessary to go digging through patterns to find something that would work. This is an adaptation of one I found online, using both different size needles and yarn. My short row heels leave something to be desired, but I'm hoping once all the yarn tails are tightened and woven in it won't be too bad. Too late now to start anything else. The quilt is being made to replace my Traverse project. Lots of stitching to do on that one yet but it was fun to dig through stash and use only fabric already on hand. That's a first for me too.InStitcheshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12866304677169061525noreply@blogger.com3
